Continuing Education came into existence for adults who wished to further their education and growth as part-time students and was especially suited to students beyond the traditional age of a college student. Generally, the Continuing Education adult student already had an education and was wishing to further his or her education on a part-time basis. Continuing Education students ordinarily enrolled in non-credit-granting schools for personal enrichment through Continuing Education courses offered by small community colleges. However, Continuing Education studies now largely include credit-granting colleges and universities that offer courses either in a classroom setting or by long-distance.

A number of fields have begun imposing Continuing Education requirements on licensed practitioners of particular professions. The requirements are intended to encourage professionals to maintain their training and remain current on new developments. Depending on the field, Continuing Education courses are often provided by organizations that cater to specific professions, and are offered through conferences and seminars designed for particular professional Continuing Education requirements.

There are many great reference and how-to articles in our Continuing Professional Education Info Center . Content categories are listed to your left and include tips, how-to's and reference. You'll find valuable information and perhaps some assistance!

Continuing Education can include traditional classroom lectures and laboratories, but distance and online independent study have become very popular and effective. The use of conference group study, which can include study networks meeting online as well as seminars and workshops, can be used to facilitate learning. Continuing Education can combine any or all of the traditional, distance, online and conference type studies.
